Terry MacAlmon Biography

In 1973, shortly after finishing high school, Terry attended a summer youth camp with his church. During an extended time of prayer, the presence of God again became so intense that he was physically unable to lift his head. His pastor, Ken Groen, recognized the significance of the moment and confirmed what Terry was sensing: God was setting him apart for ministry. During that same encounter, Terry received a vision of leading thousands of people in worship with their hands raised to God. At the time, he was simply a young church musician with no indication of how such a picture could ever become reality. Almost three decades later, while leading worship before a crowd of approximately 18,000 people in Shreveport, Louisiana, Terry suddenly found himself looking at the very scene he had seen as a young man in 1973.

The years that followed were years of learning, serving and growing. Terry worked in church ministry and learned firsthand what happened when worship was allowed to move beyond routine and when space was intentionally made for the Holy Spirit. One of his earliest and most formative influences was Pastor Ken Groen, whose willingness to stop, wait and allow silence during worship deeply affected Terry’s understanding of ministry. Instead of treating a service as a program that needed to keep moving, there were moments when the church simply waited before God. People wept, prayed and worshipped, and sometimes those moments became so significant that little or no time remained for preaching. That season established a principle Terry would carry with him for the rest of his life: the presence of God must never be sacrificed for the sake of a schedule.

The road to international ministry was not a straight line. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Terry entered a long season in which many of his ministry efforts seemed to produce very little visible fruit. After moving to Colorado Springs, he pioneered Grace Worship Center in 1991. The church remained small and eventually closed. An attempt to continue the vision as a worship center also came to an end, leaving Terry with years of disappointment, financial pressure and unanswered questions. At one point he left Colorado Springs for a worship position in Wyoming, only to return again later. What looked from the outside like a stalled ministry became a season of preparation that would eventually prove essential.

Then, after years in which very little appeared to move forward, a new chapter began. In Colorado Springs, Terry started a simple Wednesday noon worship gathering that became known as Lunch with the Lord. These meetings eventually found a home at the World Prayer Center and became a place where people from churches and ministries across the city gathered simply to worship. Terry’s approach became increasingly simple: listen, wait, follow and resist the temptation to control the outcome. Two convictions became foundational during that season: give worship back to the Bride of Christ, and keep human hands off the steering wheel.

The worship gatherings at the World Prayer Center became one of the defining chapters of Terry MacAlmon’s ministry. Week after week, people gathered not for a concert but for worship. Stories of reconciliation, healing, renewed faith and personal transformation began to emerge from those meetings. On one occasion, a father and son from New Zealand who had not spoken to one another for thirty years found themselves drawn to the communion table at the same time. In the atmosphere of worship, years of separation ended in tears, embrace and reconciliation.

The meetings were also being recorded, and those recordings began traveling far beyond Colorado Springs. Live Worship from the World Prayer Center and subsequent projects carried Terry’s piano-led worship into homes, churches, prayer rooms and ministries throughout the world. His music became associated not simply with musical excellence but with an atmosphere of worship in which listeners felt invited to slow down, turn their attention toward Jesus and become aware of the Holy Spirit. Terry has always regarded the music itself as secondary to what God chooses to do through it. The piano, the arrangements and the songs are tools; the transforming work belongs to God.

International invitations followed. Terry began ministering in churches, conferences and large gatherings around the world, often leading worship for audiences far larger than anything he had known in his earlier years. His style remained recognizable: strong piano playing, powerful congregational worship, spontaneous moments, instrumental space and a willingness to wait rather than force the next song or moment. His ministry was never intended to function primarily as Christian entertainment. The goal remained what it had been from the beginning: bringing people into an encounter with the presence of God.

In 2018, after more than forty years of ministry, Terry published his first book, 30 Seconds in His Presence. The book brought together many of the experiences, lessons and defining moments that had shaped his understanding of worship, the Holy Spirit and the presence of God. Terry had never considered himself an expert on worship; the book was written from the perspective of someone who had spent a lifetime learning, failing, growing and experiencing what happens when God’s presence becomes more important than religious activity.

The title itself captures one of the central convictions of Terry’s ministry. A person may spend years around church, Christian music and religious activity, but a genuine encounter with God can alter the direction of a life in moments. That conviction reaches all the way back to the teenage organist who encountered the presence of God while playing It Is Well with My Soul, and it remains part of Terry’s ministry today.

In 2020, when international travel and public gatherings were suddenly disrupted, Terry’s ministry took another unexpected turn. Unable to maintain a normal travel schedule, he began leading worship online from the piano. That simple response developed into An Hour With Jesus, a weekly online worship gathering that connected people from many nations in a shared hour of worship, prayer and waiting on God.

In many ways, An Hour With Jesus became a modern expression of everything that had come before it. There was no need for an elaborate production or a large platform. Once again, the essential elements were simple: a piano, worship, time and an invitation to turn attention toward Jesus. The technology was new, but the calling was not.

In 2025, Terry celebrated fifty years of ministry. The milestone represented far more than longevity. Those five decades contained small churches and international platforms, songs that traveled around the world, years of apparent obscurity, extraordinary seasons of fruitfulness, painful failure, healing, restoration and a renewed call to worship.

Today, Terry MacAlmon continues to lead worship, write, record, teach and minister through New Glory International. His older recordings continue to find new listeners, I Sing Praises continues to be sung by new generations, and An Hour With Jesus continues to connect worshippers around the world. More than fifty years after his earliest days of ministry, the heart of the calling remains unchanged.

Terry’s story is ultimately not the story of a career in Christian music. It is the story of a worshipper learning, again and again, that the greatest treasure is not the platform, the song, the recording or the audience, but the presence of God Himself.
